Not only does it have a high carbon content but it has TWO usable sides to strike with.The edges are a firm 90 degree angle which makes it totally usable to use with a ferro rod. The sparks are just as good or better than with the back of your high carbon bushcraft knife. NOT ONLY THAT, this fire steel comes with a bow drill groove on one side to hold the bow drill rod firmly down on the platform. This Esee Fire Steel is a triple threat PLUS unit. The higher price is totally worth the higher functionality of this unit. Esee is a well respected name in the Knife world. They came through with this well thought out fire steel.
